This summer contemporary sculpture out of Flanders is the main focus at Beelden aan Zee. The exhibition will be a visual spectacle, with work of established and young, emerging, Flemish artists. The reason for this theme is the celebration of 20 years of cultural cooperation between Holland and Flanders in 2015, with this the exhibition is part of the manifestation BesteBuren, a project with various cultural initiatives between Holland and Flanders. The new summer exhibition of museum Beelden aan Zee is chosen by the famous Flemish curator Stef van Bellingen, artistic director of WARP, art platform for contemporary art, Flanders, in collaboration with museum Beelden aan Zee.
Jan Fabre takes on the central space in the museum designed by Wim Quist. Here six Crosses are on display, one of them for the very first time, and the famous artwork Wall of ascending angels from the collection of the M HKA, Antwerp. The stuffed animals, devoid of any marks or wounds, hang as objects of devotion on the crosses dressed with shields of the jewel beetle. The hundreds of beetles transform the empty female figure of Wall of ascending angels into a spiritual body. The artworks in this space refer to the belief in the vulnerable body, the defense of it, examining mankind and question how it will survive in the future.
