This year, the Belgian artist Jan Fabre (b. Antwerp, 1958) has been chosen to serve as Church Warden of De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam. From 31 August until 30 September, he will have carte blanche in the church.

Jan Fabre is internationally known as one of the most innovative and multi-faceted artists of his time, who cannot be placed in a ‘box’ of any kind. Over the past 30 years he has developed a powerful image as an artist, theatrical director and writer. Whatever the medium, he is always pushing back boundaries. For De Nieuwe Kerk he has chosen an ensemble of works: films, live performances, and a sculpture that has never exhibited in the Netherlands before. His works are suffused with the symbolism of metamorphosis, the natural cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
